Twinings of London

Celebrating 300 years of tradition and taste.

Innovation

Twinings is a company built on more than just a commitment to excellence. It is a company built on vision. The vision with which Thomas Twining first started his tea business, and the forward thinking that continues to carry the Twinings brand from one century to the next.

No other company has the depths of expertise and experience that Twinings possesses. Here are just a few of the innovations that have taken place in the last century.

1706

Thomas Twining buys Tom’s Coffee Shop and begins satisfying consumers’ desire for great tea.

1956

Twinings produces its first teabags largely to satisfy the demand in the US market, where tea drinkers favoured the idea of a bag over loose tea. Twinings now produces over 5 billion teabags every year.

1976

Twinings launches its famous flavoured black teas. To meet increased interest in flavoured teas (in Scandanavia and mainland Europe particularly), Twinings releases these exceptionally popular blends.

1980s

Twinings meets demand for decaffeinated teas. Unlike competitors, Twinings waited until technology was sophisticated enough to produce a decaffeinated blend of sufficient quality and flavour worthy of the Twinings name.

1981

Twinings introduced iced teas in Europe triggered by demand in the adult soft-drink market.

1999

Twinings goes organic. After monitoring the organic market carefully, Twinings introduced its first organic product once it was sure that it could deliver the quality consumers have come to expect from the brand.

2003

Twinings launches 'Voyage' dessert teas in the UK. Twinings develops a range of distinctive, unusual blends combining the native tea and local flavours of exotic regions of the world.

2005
